National Holidays in October

October 1   Nigeria-National Day
Nigeria is an ancient country in Africa. In the 8th century AD, the Zaghawa nomads established the Kanem-Bornou Empire around Lake Chad. Portugal invaded in 1472. The British invaded in the mid-16th century. It became a British colony in 1914 and was called “Nigeria Colony and Protectorate”. In 1947, the United Kingdom approved Nigeria’s new constitution and established the federal government. In 1954, the Federation of Nigeria gained internal autonomy. It declared independence on October 1, 1960 and became a member of the Commonwealth.

Activities: The federal government will hold a rally in the largest Eagle Plaza in the capital, Abuja, and the state and state governments mostly hold celebrations at local stadiums. The ordinary people gather their relatives and friends to have a party.
October 2    India-Gandhi’s Birthday
Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869. When talking about the Indian National Liberation Movement, he would naturally think of Gandhi. Gandhi participated in the local movement against racial discrimination in South Africa, but he believed that all political struggles must be based on the spirit of “kindness”, which ultimately led to the victory of the struggle in South Africa. In addition, Gandhi played a pivotal role in India’s struggle for independence.

Activities: The Indian Student Union dressed up as “Mahatma” Gandhi to commemorate Gandhi’s birthday.

October 3     Germany-Unification Day
This day is a national statutory holiday. It is a national holiday to commemorate the official announcement of the unification of the former Federal Republic of Germany (formerly West Germany) and the former German Democratic Republic (formerly East Germany) on October 3, 1990.

October 11    Multinational-Columbus Day
Columbus Day is also known as Columbia Day. October 12th is a holiday in some American countries and is a federal holiday in the United States. The date is October 12th or the second Monday of October each year to commemorate Christopher Columbus’s first landing on the American continent in 1492. The United States first initiated the commemoration in 1792, which was the 300th anniversary of Columbus’s arrival in the Americas.

Activities: The main way to celebrate is to parade in gorgeous costumes. In addition to the floats and the parade phalanx during the parade, US officials and some celebrities will also participate.

Canada-Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving Day in Canada and Thanksgiving Day in the United States are not on the same day. The second Monday in October in Canada and the last Thursday in November in the United States are Thanksgiving Day, which is celebrated in the whole country. Three days of holiday are stipulated from this day. Even people who are far away in a foreign land have to rush back to reunite with their families before the festival to celebrate the festival together.
Americans and Canadians attach great importance to Thanksgiving, comparable to the traditional grand holiday-Christmas.

India-Durga Festival
According to records, Shiva and Vishnu learned that the fierce god Asura had become a water buffalo to torture the gods, so they sprayed a kind of flame on the earth and the universe, and the flame became the goddess Durga. The goddess rode a lion sent by the Himalayas, stretched out 10 arms to challenge Asura, and finally killed Asura. In order to thank Goddess Durga for her deeds, Hindus sent her back home to reunite with her relatives by throwing water, thus the Durga Festival was started.

Activity: Listen to Sanskrit in the shed and pray to the goddess to fend off disasters and shelter for them. The believers sang and danced and transported the gods to the sacred river or lake, which means to send the goddess home. To celebrate Durga Festival, lanterns and festoons were displayed everywhere.

October 12    Spain-National Day
Spain National Day is October 12, originally Spain Day, to commemorate the great historical event that Columbus reached the American continent on October 12, 1492. Since 1987, this day has been designated as Spain’s National Day.

Activities: At the annual celebration ceremony, the king reviews the army of the sea, land and air.

October 15    India-Tokachi Festival
Tokachi is a Hindu festival and a major national holiday. According to the Hindu calendar, Tokachi Festival starts on the first day of the month of Kugak, and is celebrated for 10 consecutive days. It is usually between September and October of the Gregorian calendar. The Tokachi Festival is derived from the epic “Ramayan” and has a tradition for thousands of years. This festival celebrates the 10th day of the battle between the hero Rama and the ten-headed demon King Robona in the eyes of the Hindus, and the final victory, so it is called the “Ten Victory Festival”.

Activities: During the festival, people gathered together to celebrate Rama’s victory over the “Ten Devil King” Rabona. During the “Tokachi Festival”, grand gatherings praising Rama’s deeds were held everywhere in the first 9 days. On the street, you can often see the performing arts team with bands clearing the way and good men and women, and occasionally you can run into red and green bullock carts and elephant carts full of actors. Both the walking performing arts team or the costumed bull carts and elephant carts acted as they marched, until the last day they defeated “Ten Devil King” Lobo Na.

October 18     Multi-Country-Holy Scripture
The Festival of Sacraments, also known as the Festival of Taboos, is called the “Mao Luther” Festival in Arabic, which is the 12th day of March in the Islamic calendar. Sacramento, Eid al-Fitr, and Gurban are also known as the three major festivals of Muslims all over the world. They are the anniversary of the birth and death of the founder of Islam, Muhammad.

Activities: Festival activities are usually hosted by the imam of the local mosque. By then, Muslims will bathe, change clothes, dress neatly, go to the mosque to worship, listen to the imam reciting the inspiration of the “Quran”, telling the history of Islam and Muhammad’s great achievements in reviving Islam.

October 28     Czech Republic-National Day
From 1419 to 1437, the Hussite movement against the Holy See and the German nobility broke out in the Czech Republic. In 1620, it was annexed by the Habsburg dynasty of Austria. After the First World War, the Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed and the Czechoslovak Republic was established on October 28, 1918. In January 1993, Czech Republic and Sri Lanka broke up, and Czech Republic continued to use October 28 as the National Day.

October 29    Turkey-Announcement of the Day of the Founding of the Republic
After the First World War, the Allied Powers such as Britain, France and Italy forced Turkey to sign the humiliating “Treaty of Sefer.” Turkey is in danger of being divided up completely. In order to save the independence of the nation, the nationalist revolutionary Mustafa Kemal began to organize and lead the national resistance movement and achieved a brilliant victory. The Allies were forced to recognize the independence of Turkey at the Lausanne Peace Conference. On October 29, 1923, the new Turkish Republic was proclaimed and Kemal was elected as the first president of the Republic. The history of Turkey has opened a new page.

Events: Turkey and Northern Cyprus celebrate the Turkish Republic Day every year. The celebration usually starts in the afternoon on Republic Day. All government agencies and schools will be closed, and all cities in Turkey will also have fireworks displays.

October 31    Multi-Country-Halloween
Halloween is the eve of the 3-day Western Christian festival Halloween. In Western countries, people come to celebrate on October 31. On this evening, American children are used to playing “trick or treat” games. All Hallow’s Eve will be on October 31st on Halloween, All Saints’ Day will be on November 1st, and All Souls’ Day will be on November 2nd to commemorate all the dead, especially the deceased relatives.

Activities: Mainly popular in Western countries such as the United States, the British Isles, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand where people of Saxon descent gather. The children will put on makeup and masks and collect candies from door to door that night.
